Compost Worms:
Compost worms do not live in soil like the worms most people think of. Instead these worms live in piles of highly organic decomposing material (compost). The worms can eat through this material very quickly, which significantly speeds up the composting process. The worms do more than just speed up the process, they add tons of beneficial micro-organisms to the mix too! The added micro-organisms and beneficial bacteria that the worms add to the compost can be very beneficial to plants when the compost is later used in your lawn or garden.
Red Worms – these are the most common and best worms to use if you main goal is composting with worms (aka. vermicomposting).
European Nightcrawlers – these worms are very good to compost with as well. They are larger than the red worms so they may be the choice for someone who wants to compost and fish with their worms.
African Nightcrawlers – these worms are the largest of the compost worms. They are slightly bigger than the Euros which also makes them an ideal size for fishing. These worms make good compost too. These worms like to crawl around a lot especially when entering a new environment, which make them a little harder to raise.
Soil Worms
Soil worms are the traditional type of worm that most people picture when they think about worms. These worms live in the ground. They too eat decomposing material, although they don’t need as much to survive as the compost worms. Soil worms provide several benefits to any soil including: aeration, fertilization, and soil conditioning. Adding these worms to your soil will help improve your soil quality, they also attract other natural soil worms already in the area.
Alabama Jumpers – these are the best soil worm for most areas of the country. They can survive in the toughest soil conditions and are very active. They can provide soil aeration to your lawn or garden, even tough clay soil.
Canadian Nightcrawlers – these are a soil worm that prefer a cold climate. These are deep burrowing worms that also provide soil aeration. Those two factors make these worms difficult to grow in the US. These are the worms that you find in your local bait shop.
Fishing Worms
Canadian Nightcrawlers – these are the same worms that you will find in your local bait shop. These worms should be kept refrigerated until you are ready to use them. They are the largest worm we sell and are quite popular with most fisherman. These worms can NOT be grown in a bin.
African Nightcrawlers – these worms are the largest of the compost worms. We sell them as full sized worms that are ready for fishing with. Since these are compost worms they can be raised in a compost pile or bin yourself and will continue to reproduce so you never need to buy fishing worms again. Do NOT refrigerate these worms, they are tropical worms and will die at temperatures below 60 degrees.
European Nightcrawlers – these worms slightly than the African Nightcrawlers, but are easier to raise and can with stand a greater variation in temperatures. Since these are compost worms they can be raised in a compost pile or bin yourself and will continue to reproduce so you never need to buy fishing worms again. By default we sell these worms as bed run (meaning they will come in all sizes) – if you want all full sized worms be sure to mention that during checkout.
